Most seasoned blackjack players are intimately acquainted with the “correct way to play” blackjack. The basic strategy is that you must assume that the dealer has a down card worth 10. Those cards are 10s, Jacks, Queens or Kings. We then use the dealer’s up card to decide what to do. The strategy varies slightly between players, but in general these are rules:
- The dealer is weakest when showing a 4, 5 or 6, so stick on anything over 11.
- The dealer is next weakest when showing a 2 or 3, so hit 12, but stick on 13 or over.
- The dealer is strongest when showing a 7, 8, 9,10, Jack, Queen, King or Ace, you must hit 16, or even a soft 17 and 18 when the dealer showing a 10 or Ace.
The strategies vary as to when you split pairs, double down and hit soft-hands. Some involve the use of surrender, which is forfeiting half your bet after seeing your cards. As you can see, while we all tend agree on how to play the most common blackjack hands, there is much variance among the strategies. This makes each player at the table a somewhat unique. Unfortunately, while the most seasoned blackjack players use a somewhat common strategy, some folks either are unaware and/or unimpressed with these rules. When they play blackjack, they play their way, which usually involves splitting 10s and hitting 16’s while the dealer is showing a 5. My advice, get up and leave the table. Head home and play blackjack online, 1 on 1. against the house.
